Project Focus: A flexible front of house for a new library branch
The Location
The new Spruce Grove Public Library Branch, located in Spruce Grove Alberta, Canada, is a full-service branch offering improved and expanded access to collection items, programs, and services that respond to the diverse needs of this growing community.
The new front of house service desks were generously funded by Friends of the Spruce Grove Public Library, a non-profit organization that supports and advocates for library services through fundraising, community engagement, and public events.
The Challenge
The new branch’s front-of-house area encompasses a 26-foot-long, narrow footprint anchored by a back wall. In planning the furniture for the service point, they had several key requirements:
- Two circulation desks and one reference desk
- A central storage module to house a small credit card terminal and cash drawer
- Additional storage for stationery and paperwork
- Flexibility to easily relocate pods as service needs evolve
- Neutral colors to coordinate with yet-to-be-finalized interior finish.
The Solution: YAKETY YAK Service Desks
After a positive experience with our 300 Series desks at the Central Branch, the team was drawn to the clean, modular design of the 100 Series Pods for the new space. Working closely with Paul from YAKETY YAK, they selected:
Why This Configuration Works
- Mobility and Flexibility: The modular style of the 100 Series supports layout changes over time. To further enhance this, all three Pods were fitted with retracting castors.
- Contemporary Design: The 100 Series’ sleek lines and organic curves complement the architectural interior of the new library.
- Ergonomic Functionality: Height-adjustable Pods allow staff to tailor their workstations to suit different users and tasks.
- Integrated Storage::
- The 100 Work Module features 5 drawers including a cash drawer insert in the top drawer. The cowling around the worktop allows for discreet placement of the Square terminal.
- The two 100 Support caddies provide space for brochure display along with plenty of storage, while helping to define each pod’s staff space.
Colors, Finishes and Options
- The dark IRONSTONE worktops paired with STORM GREY upper barrels provide a neutral foil to the eye catching lime green feature wall and woodgrain cabinets behind the service desks.
- YAKETY YAK Retracting castors are fitted to all three Pods, these can be lowered for ease of re-configuring layouts.
- An Armadillo cable cover provides tidy and safe soft cable reticulation between the 100 Work Module and floor box.
