Regardless of a person’s age, race, gender or religious beliefs, the library is a place where opportunity lives. They provide a neutral space and services that equip people with the knowledge and skills they need to contribute positively to their communities.<\/p>\n

Libraries without borders<\/h5>\n

Established in 2007 by Patrick Weil, Libraries Without\u00a0Borders<\/a> (LWB) is one of the leading NGOs working\u00a0globally to support libraries in developing countries.<\/p>\n

Through its work, LWB supports local initiatives to promote education, access to information, and cultural heritage conservation. LWB now works in over 50 countries, improving access to information through building libraries, training librarians, distributing books, supporting local publishing and designing library networks.<\/p>\n

One of their key projects is the Ideas Box, an innovative tool that provides access to information, education and cultural resources to refugee and underserved communities worldwide.

The Michael Cronhelm\u00a0Foundation Trust<\/h5>\n

The\u00a0Michael Cronhelm Foundation Trust<\/a> (MCFT), \u00a0in collaboration with the local people, began building educational facilities in Ileret, Northern Kenya, in 2009. Since then, they have built a much-needed community library, started a preschool and in 2015, in collaboration with the Taft Conlin Foundation, took over the running of the El Bokoch Primary School. Six new classrooms, a library and separate teacher\u2019s accommodation compound have been added, the school now serving 549 children.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hearing of the school\u2019s success Elders from a village 10 hours\u2019 drive south of Ileret requested a girl\u2019s high school to be constructed, serving the local indigenous people as well as Daasanach girls living in Southern Ethiopia. This Lake Turkana Girls High School project has progressed well with two classrooms completed along with an ablution block and secure perimeter fence around classrooms and sports field. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2026, MCFT and partners will be fundraising to further expand the high school buildings and provide desks, chairs, books and sporting equipment. Fundraising is now also underway for a second Lake Turkana Girls high school to be built at the southern end of Lake Turkana.<\/span><\/p>\n
